Analysing the conventional structures of music videos

Today, we worked individually and analysed serveral music videos of similar genre on YouTube. I have looked at rock music:

Generally, the music video of sweet child o’mine is a vintage style video with low image quality. The singer wearing hood and sunglasses on his head, the black jacket make him looks ”old school”. The video is set in a big stage, and there are shots of people preparing the stage, it included close up of instruments, wide shot of band performance and many lip syncs. The colour changed from black and white to full colour about the end, and the ending scene is the image of the logo of the band, which existed in the beginning, that could refer back to the start of the video and notice audiences, the song is almost finish. The singer as the main artist in the video end the scene, and the colour goes back to black and white, which is like a circulation. I think this video is a good example of using low image quality video to show the vintage style is one of the methods. Also, colour of the images could change, in order to provide differen feelings to the audiences.

We don’t have to dance

We don’t have to dance is a B&W video as well, and it starts with the spot light, and then introduce the main artist. There fore shoots such as gold fish, champagne that convey the style of the video is luxury and high class. There are titles that introduce the name of the artist and many lip syncs and band performance included in the video. I really like the use of lighting and the composition of the images. Similar to the last music video, It goes back to the beginning part, a man sitting on a sofa and watching something, which is a open ending. The music video reminds me a good location for filming—The theatre. There are various lighting, smoke machine and so on, that we could reduce the cost of production, at the same time, it provides good environment to show the effect in an effective way.

I want to break free

The music video “I want to break free” by queen is a vintage style video, there are some funny elements, like the band dressed as women and doing housework in the living room. I like the transition of the location changed from the house to the concert. There are many shoots of lip syncs, band performance and dance on the stage. The video put in a lot of funny elements. Also, the dancing part, make the general style more artistic. 

The thing I am worry about is the visual style and the music of our MV, because the theme is about death, however, they are celebrating it, I want to make it look artistic and combine Jack’s pitch(Hey Life) into the video. Therefore, we need to continue to work on the visual and plan the structure of the video.
